INSPIRATION from Sharon
"Let's use this time to emphasize connecting the lettering with personal feeling and one’s own words—a meaningful mantra or something fun to write. This is an opportunity for experimenting with improvisation in terms of writing words and designing as you go.

We’ll start simply and grow from there, always rooted in the knowledge and experience of the forms—and variations on their rhythm, spacing and proportions."

STRUCTURE: Our time together
The timing and structure has been carefully designed to get the most out of our live time together and the weeks in between.

In the Northern hemisphere, we began on the Fall Equinox on September 23. This is the time at which the sun crosses the plane of the equator away from the relevant hemisphere, making day and night of equal length.

And we ended our exploration time together on Samhain (pronounced  saa·wn). Letting go, coming to terms, and making peace will be the themes…leading to comfort and tranquility. A beautiful close for our time together.

While this is a continuation of Illuminating the Dark, where we discovered our own signature styles, unique words, and worked on black paper with gouache and colored, pencil. This is not required, you may begin your dance here in Dancing with the Dark. If you would like to purchase the previous course at a discount, click here.

YOUR GUIDE

Sharon Zeugin makes art, teaches, and facilitates workshops in her Austin, Texas Studio, and throughout the USA, Canada and Italy. In addition to being a faculty member of numerous international calligraphy conferences, Sharon teaches locally in her studio and at the Austin Contemporary Art School.  Her award winning work appears in the Speedball Textbook, Letter Arts Review, The Calligrapher's Engagement Calendar, Somerset Studio Magazine, and the Lark Book,The Art and Craft of Hand Lettering. In addition to teaching & exhibiting her work, she works as a graphic recorder and sketch note artist.

Influenced by her training as a therapist, Sharon seeks to cultivate a safe classroom environment in which respect for body, mind and spirit are as important as skill building; where students are encouraged to experience art making as an experimental, intuitive and mindful practice. Whether teaching courses in traditional or contemporary calligraphy, mixed media art, art journaling, drawing, sketching or painting, Sharon's goal is to help students get over fear of the blank page.  When she is not teaching, sketching or painting, Sharon is busy performing with Austin Samba School, swimming, dancing, walking, tandem biking with her husband.

YOUR HOST

Heather Leavitt Martinez holds space for participants to learn online and shines a light on the best that an instructor has to offer. Trained tech host, lettering artist, and as an Appreciative Inquiry facilitator, Heather practices the Poetic principle: What we choose to study makes a difference. It describes – even creates – the world as we know it. She also aches for, aims to become, and often steps into her future desired self.
