Lettering with Pencils

Learn the most versatile lettering technique with the most simple of tools: the pencil.

In this hands-on lettering class, participants will learn the pressure release graphite technique they can apply to a variety of lettering styles and drawing.

We will start by testing different types of graphite. We will then continue through several exercises and end up with a small portfolio book of techniques you can refer to for your next project.

Whether you draw, letter, or just love pencils, this class will get you started and keep you inspired.

No experience necessary.

When you sign up, you will receive:

This small zine was created for Blackwing Pencils printed on 25% cotton paper with a cockle finish.

Heather Leavitt Martinez is a lettering artist and author of the award-winning book, “Lettering Journey: Fast, Functional, Fun!” She is also a Blackwing ambassador who believes that slowing down should be savored.

Currently featured in the July issue of Bound & Lettered magazine, Heather and Carol sought out and tested a replacement for Gilbert Bond paper. Capitol Bond is an excellent surface for calligraphy, whether you are writing with graphite or ink. Be sure to check out the article and enjoy the other wonderful contributions by experts in the calligraphy community.

I tested many similar papers using a variety of wet media and writing tools to find a replacement for Gilbert Bond. There was no bleeding, feathering, or soaking through the paper with any of the wet media (gouache, sumi, watercolor, Higgins Eternal, and Pilot Parallel Pen fountain pen ink). The paper has a surface with enough tooth for smooth writing with the metal pens and brushes tested and is thin enough to view guidelines from behind. Capitol Bond folds well and would be excellent for bookmaking projects plus I was able to blind emboss without concern of punching through the paper. I highly recommend Capitol Bond paper!
